Goa Board Prepares for NEP-Aligned NCERT Textbooks for Classes IX–XI from Academic Year 2027–28
Goa Board plans to adopt new NEP-based NCERT textbooks for key subjects from 2027–28 while retaining local history and geography content.on Jun 02, 2026
Even as the NCERT is busy working on developing new textbooks according to NEP 2020 guidelines for students from Classes IX to XI, the Goa Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education is prepared for the implementation of the same.
Chairman of the board, Bhagirath Shetye, has stated that Goa’s plan of action when it comes to the adoption of the new curriculum is likely to be in 2027-28 academic session onwards. As per the Goa Board, topics like English, Maths, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and Hindi are most likely to adopt NCERT textbooks in their original form at least initially.
Goa, however, intends to use its own History and Geography books for the foreseeable future. These two subjects have just recently got themselves updated books with local content.
"As far as the current syllabus for classes IX to XII is concerned, we will use the books in the current form till the next academic year 2026–27. After the NCERT releases the books in that year, we can directly adopt them for the core subjects. In the case of Hindi, we will test them out and then take a decision accordingly," Shetye said.
Goa board is presently using textbooks prepared by NCERT for some of the subjects, namely English, Mathematics, Science, Economics, and Psychology. However, locally designed textbooks are still being used for certain subjects, namely Accountancy and Secretarial Practice.
Earlier, NCERT had announced the introduction of a road map for the use of textbooks that would be designed based on the NCFSE 2023, which was formulated with an aim to achieve the objectives of NEP 2020. As of now, draft syllabus for Class IX has already been uploaded on the website of NCERT for feedback.
Even though textbooks for Class IX are still in the process of being designed, revisions of textbooks for Classes X and XI are planned to be introduced during the academic year 2027-28.
This development has once again brought the nation closer towards the successful implementation of NEP 2020.
